HOW TO AVOID THE COLD & FLU THIS SEASON

SNOW IN THE BAHAMAS

Sounds ridiculous, I know, but it did happen.

You would never think this was possible in a place like The Bahamas, known for its all-year-round sunny weather, clear turquoise waters and beautiful beaches. However, but back on January 19, 1977 snow fell on Grand Bahama, one of the Bahama Islands and much of Florida  in a bitterly cold winter for the eastern United States.

At 6:10 am on January 19th, West Palm Beach reported snowflakes. Soon after, Miami and as the snow - an ice and rain mix - continued south, Grand Bahama made similar reports of light snow and rain.

Despite the the short life of the storm, the event received wide local coverage as a once in a lifetime phenomenon.

THE COLD & FLU SEASON IS HERE AGAIN
____________________________________________

Whether or not snow or icy cold weather is normal where you live, the winter season usually brings with it a drastic increase in the number of people who suffer from the common cold and the flu.

Don't you just hate struggling to sleep when you have a bad cold because you can't breath properly? You're stuck having to breath through your mouth! As a child growing up I remember always having to have my Vicks Inhaler at night to help me breath so I could sleep. (Anyone remember this?)

Our 2 boys (Jason & Jarrell, ages 4 and 3) use to suffer from congestion and a runny nose so often that we would have to keep a box (and yes, sometimes a roll) of tissue in the car at all times.

THE BEST CURE FOR THE COLD or FLU IS PREVENTION
_________________________________________________

Have you ever wondered though, what really is the cold?
The common cold is a viral infection of your upper respiratory tract — your nose and throat. A common cold is usually harmless, although it may not feel that way at the time. If it's not a runny nose, sore throat and cough, it's the watery eyes, sneezing and congestion — or maybe all of the above. In fact, because any one of more than 100 viruses can cause a common cold, signs and symptoms tend to vary greatly.

Preschool children are at greatest risk of frequent colds, but even healthy adults can expect to have a few colds each year.

Most people recover from a common cold in about a week or two. If symptoms don't improve, you should see your doctor.

What really is the flu?
Influenza, commonly known as the "flu," is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A or B viruses. Flu appears most frequently in winter and early spring. The flu virus attacks the body by spreading through the upper and/or lower respiratory tract. Influenza is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system — your nose, throat and lungs.   More >>

Do I have the flu?

There's really no cure for the flu. It just has to run its course. Usually the best remedy is lots of bed rest and plenty of fluids. Your doctor may prescribe antiviral medication to help treat the symptoms.
